Ozamiz City, Philippines - In response to the alarming rise in dengue cases and the global burden of the disease, Ozamiz City, under the leadership of Mayor Indy Oaminal, joined the ASEAN Countries in commemorating ASEAN Dengue Day on June 15. The city organized a series of activities aimed at raising awareness and promoting proactive measures to fight against the mosquito-borne viral disease.

Dengue has become a pressing public health issue worldwide, affecting millions of individuals each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease has now become endemic in over 100 countries, with Asia shouldering approximately 70% of the global burden. The rising number of dengue cases poses a significant threat to affected countries, resulting in both loss of human lives and strain on healthcare systems.

In line with the ASEAN Dengue Day, Ozamiz City conducted a simultaneous clean-up drive in all 51 barangays from 6:00 to 8:00 AM. Residents actively participated in searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, a critical step in controlling the spread of dengue. The clean-up drive aimed to eliminate potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes and reduce their population.

Furthermore, a Dengue Awareness lecture was held in Barangay Annex at 9:00 am. The lecture aimed to educate residents about the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures against dengue. Local health experts and officials shared valuable insights on self-protection from mosquito bites, the importance of early consultation when dengue symptoms occur, and the need for fogging when necessary. Additionally, sustaining hydration was highlighted as a vital strategy to combat the effects of the disease.

Mayor Indy Oaminal has been proactive in addressing the rising number of dengue cases in Ozamiz City. In a memorandum issued earlier, he emphasized the strict implementation of a weekly cleanup drive and the adoption of the 5S Strategy. The 5S Strategy includes searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, self-protection from mosquito bites, seeking early consultation for dengue symptoms, saying yes to fogging when required, and sustaining hydration.

The observance of ASEAN Dengue Day in Ozamiz City serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against dengue and the necessity to remain vigilant in implementing preventive measures. By raising awareness, fostering community involvement, and adopting sustainable strategies, Ozamiz City aims to create a safer and healthier environment for its residents and contribute to the broader efforts in combating dengue on a regional scale. As the threat of dengue looms, Ozamiz City reaffirm their commitment to fight against this deadly disease and strive for a dengue-free future.
